So a new genre of music seems to be emerging, or, rather “re-emerging.” From the 50’s. You know, the genre that seems to include a TON of organ playing, kind of touching on surf-rock, Beach Boys-esque tunes, yet mixing in some more modern vocals. To be real honest, I love it. Bands such as Beach House, Best Coast and Wild Nothing seem are bringing this genre to life. Another band that is following in these same footsteps is Tennis. I personally love Tennis, a married duo inspired to make music they love (that also expresses their love…FOR love) following a whimsical journey on a sailboat. Yup, a sailboat. Newlyweds Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley set sail for seven months after tying the knot, only to end up back in Colorado, broke, to bless us with an album that was inspired by their ocean escapades. Although this full length album is not yet complete and there is no known release date (or album name), the singles they have collected on their Baltimore EP will most definitely do for the time being. The songs are catchy and extremely memorable, touching on summer nostalgia, backyard barbecues (with a cold brew in hand) and that really awesome summer fling you had, that one time, back in the day.
“Marathon,” the song that instantly sucked me in to the sweetness that is Tennis, subtlety demonstrates what this duo is capable of. Alaina’s voice is kind and innocent, and the melody is catchy and simple. The lyrics also evoke images of what it would be like to set sail for a little while, and touch on the joys of lust and love. Download “Marathon” here, and then head over to Daytrotter to check out and download a live session, which is equally as awesome to the Baltimore EP.
