A Dynamite Designer, GetYourBizSavvy Logo Contest Winner

Posted on 15 January 2010 by Alex Monroe

The GetYourBizSavvy logo is courtesy of Sue Heap.  She won our Logo Contest.  Her logo stood out as it gave GetYourBizSavvy.com a signature look.  She knew exactly what would work and it worked perfectly.  We strongly recommend her work to those seeking a talented designer.

Below is a short introduction on the designer, which is followed by a few questions we asked Heap in order to learn more about her and her designing.

Sue Heap knows how to manage her time. With four kids, one being her business, she is able to take care of all of them and even go to school. Heap is what you call a “go getter”.  She went back to school to learn web design and she has the drive to learn more and more to stay one step ahead of the new techniques.  She stands out from her competition in the sense that she knows how to give people what they want. In essence, she listens and has an eye for what looks great for each job. In the questions below, Heap will help you understand why she got into design, how her designs are unique, and why she is her own boss instead of reporting to one.

Why did you decide to get into the design field?

I guess the simple answer is, I love it. Design was something I always found myself coming back to. Even in college, I tried a few different majors but when I was in my junior year I was back where I started, with a graphic design major.  Back then, we were doing things very much old school.  After graduating in 1988, I began working for a large pool company in Buffalo, NY. Yes, believe it or not there are a few days the temperature will go above 30.  It was there I had my first chance to train on a computer – that was it, I was hooked. I moved to the Tampa Bay area in 1990. I have worked for a few advertising agencies in the printing department. That gave me the opportunity of learning the printing process from the ground up.

What is a unique characteristic about you and your designing?

I like to think I have visual sensibility. An understanding of what works and what doesn’t work visually. I take in the world both visually and conceptually. My approach to designing is to look at an idea from all sides, searching for an approach with a twist – one that goes beyond the ordinary. I am constantly learning.  I want to know what the latest ideas and techniques are, discovering inventive ways to communicate.

Why did you want to start a business instead of working for a firm?

To be honest, it is something that just happened. I was working for a printing company when I was laid off. After having no luck finding a job, I decided to take the plunge and go back to school to learn web design. With today’s technology companies are no longer looking to print. The web has changed all that. You can reach thousands with just the click of a mouse. Currently, I am in my second year at St. Petersburg College seeking an AS in Web Design. I have designed and developed a few web sites and now I really want to build my portfolio with some great designs.

I have three children in school and having my own business offers the flexibility I need. I can take them to school, come home and do some work, talk to clients, and even get a workout in.  Later in the day I can help with homework, cook dinner and work some more. Every job is new and different. Sometimes I get up early, before everybody else, and get a chunk of work done. I can get ten times more work done in the quiet of my own home. Getting paid to do something you love is really what it is all about.

If you could describe your designs in three words what would they be?

  • Unique
  • Fresh
  • Timeless

What are your goals?

A personal goal I have is to become a successful businesswoman.  I would like to be an example of a design business owner that has a thriving business as well as a family and active personal life.
